Neo Soul in 10 AlbumsIn the midst of the 90s when hip-hop was going through its golden age, a revolution within soul music was also underway. With Erykah Badu, D’angelo, Jill Scott and many others, the genre found again its class: an echo of the simplicity and refinement that brought to life the albums of Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield and Roberta Flack. After years in the shadow of the reigning ultra-commercial and soft R&B, the noticeably more underground Neo Soul, or Nu Soul, relit the flame of soul music and returned it to its roots in terms of both composition and lyricism.

A brief but highly influential movement.

Hailing from France but singing mostly in English, Nkake may not be the first to marry a world vibe with clear soulful grooves (WAY heavy on the soul here) but she is one of the most distinct artists to do so.She has a truly smoky voice that stands out and has a lot great material to work with here. Her backing grooves are intimate and funky, with some sharp edges. She's also got some clear world music chops, and has some ear-popping Zap Mama moments here without veering off track. This is a sure record that isn't scared to take you to a couple of places. You don't mind the kidnapping though because she always grounds you in something strong. While I hesitate to recommend her to anyone who's got their heads stuffed in the radio these days, I heartily recommend her to anyone into smooth jazz, Meshell NdegeOcello, world music or Julie Dexter.or all of the above. ESPECIALLY anyone into all of the above.
